Figure 1: Definitions of Death in Relation to Pregnancy4 The Pregnancy Mortality Surveillance System used by the CDC requires that a pregnancy-related death satisfy both temporal and casual criteria. A pregnancy-related death is defined as the death of a woman during or within 1 year of pregnancy that was caused by a pregnancy complication, a chain of events initiated by pregnancy, or the aggravation of an unrelated condition by the physiologic effects of pregnancy. In contrast, the World Health Organization defines maternal mortality as ‘‘the death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy, irrespective of the duration and the site of the pregnancy, from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy or its management, but not from accidental or incidental causes.’’
